Meghan Dodds
Hello! My name is Meg, I am an artist and small business owner for Canvas and Cloak. I graduated from Rowan University in May of 2026 with a Bachelors in Fine Arts and Studio Arts.
My work varies between mediums and materials, but currently I mainly use oil paint to showcase personal experiences of mental struggle through hardship. The subjects I’ve painted into my work are people from my life, or animals which represent them. Through this painting I tell a story of being held back mentally, more specifically due to someone else’s actions against oneself.
With symbolism, my work focuses on relating personal experiences to my audience, sharing a connection of mental obstacle and pain. I’m influenced by artist PQHAÜS, who explores different experiences and emotions through various traumatic experiences through the symbolism of blurring faces or hiding identities. I’m inspired by his impact to educate and showcase personal struggle while also making the same stories relatable or identifiable by his audiences.
I also create work centered around other inspirations, such as music and literature. I have a series of denim jackets I’ve created inspired by a variety of these artists. I enjoy showcasing some of the artwork and artists I’m inspired by, which can be seen in many of my pieces. Some of my inspirations are bands of various genres, movies and TV, and Greek Mythology stories.
My latest exhibition, Booze and Peppermint, tells some of my personal stories as well as those impacted by alcoholism to emphasize the importance of mental and physical health. Using oil paint and exploring multi-media forms has become a form of spiritual healing for myself, as understanding the experiences of those with alcoholism or those impacted by loved one’s alcoholism is sought throughout my work. I aim to destigmatize the idea of alcoholism as a whole and revisit the experience as human, while also touching upon the healing it takes to live around alcoholism and its effects.
